Designed between 1903 and
1906 by none other than Scotland's most famous architect Charles Rennie
Mackintosh: The Scotland Street School Museum is a wonderfully accurate
depiction of Scottish schools and the education system over the years.
This truly fascinating experience includes three fully reconstructed
class rooms each representing a different era- from Victorian times,
through World War 2 to the 50's and 60's. The cloakrooms, barrel vaulted
cookery rooms and a ceramic-tiled 'drill-hall' amongst other things
have also been restored to their original Mackintosh Design.
Visitors are also offered the chance to listen to old pupils recollect
on their school experiences through the years from the disciplinary
methods of their teachers to war evacuations. The museum also encourages
you to search database system for your families' old class pictures
and test your design skills on the touch screen computers of the Mackintosh
room. If visitors would like to experience for themselves a school
experience during an era of their choice - the museum offers a 'back
to school' role playing programme- so don't forget your homework!
Located in the South of the city near Shields Road underground (Subway),
the museum offers great transport links from around the city, café
and gallery shopping facilities as well as free admission and wheelchair
access. A must see for any Mackintosh enthusiast, or anyone with the
slightest interest in the cities' history.
