Being a sport that started
and spread from Scotland it is fitting for it to have the first national
museum of football in the world. What better place to have such a
museum than at Hampden Park, the oldest stadium in the world today
that is still in use.
The museum was built in Hampden Park when the stadium itself was rebuilt
back in 1990. With over 2000 objects on display it is certainly an
impressive collection of football memorabilia.
Exhibits include the world's oldest cap and match ticket from the
first international match in1872. Also on display is the world oldest
international football trophy from the Scottish Football Association
Challenge Cup, in 1873.
Exhibitions which change periodically have been known to include such
items as black and white photographs from the renowned Tim Hall and
also the Clyde 1 super scoreboard showcase, which highlights 30 years
of radio commentary for football.
Why not test your goal scoring skills against the computer-simulation
of goal scoring at Hampden. After your shot is taken the speed is
electronically recorded and if you are in the top 100 your name will
be recorded on the website for all to see.
Stadium tours are available where you will get to see everything from
the underground tunnel and changing rooms to the pitch itself. Visit
the gift shop where you can buy everything from souvenirs to replica
jerseys.
The Scottish Football Museum really is a fantastic day out, located
at Hampden Park on the south side of the city. Bus links and train
links available and also easy access by road.
